Ticking noise

My friend went to get in his car and tried to turn it on and it wouldn't start, it just made this weird ticking noise. I suggested to him that his battery might be dead and he might need a new one. I'm not totally sure about this, but I told him I'd ask around and see if anyone knew what it could be. So please write back if you have any information as to why this could have happened.
